Can I teach just graphic design in public schools?
Question by TheHeftyLefty: Can I teach just graphic design in public schools?
I have a bachelor’s in visual arts, but I know I need to acquire a teacher’s certificate in order to teach in public schools. I don’t want to teach fine arts, because i’m not too familar with it, but computer art and web design is what I would like to teach. Are schools looking for just graphic design teachers or I have to be well versed in all aspects of arts (aka fine art, photography). Also, I live in New Jersey if that makes a difference.

You do need a teacher certification in order to teach. What you want to do is go to the New Jersey Department of Education Website and look in to what they require for licensure. This gets VERY confusing (I’ve done it myself in two different states), so if you get a little lost, just call up the DOE. It might take some time to get through, but they are actually quite helpful.
It is quite possible to certify on your own. Many current teachers majored in their subject in college, then did the certification after graduation.
As far as visual arts goes, I don’t know HOW much of a demand there is. I know that every school I’ve look in to has had computer design classes for students. I doubt you’d need to be well versed in the fine arts as that is usually an Art teacher’s job, not a computer teacher’s.
Another thing to consider is to get other types of computer certifications. There is a very high demand for computer repair/webpage design and maintainence/networking in school districts. If you could offer yourself as both a web design/computer art teacher AND someone who is capable of doing the upkeep of the school or district site, you’d be in an amazing position.
Best of luck!
